Wairarapa Masterton Tararua electricity upgrade

We’re investing an estimated $10 million in electricity network upgrades across Wairarapa and Tararua to improve the reliability, resilience and safety of power supply for local communities.  

This work includes replacing ageing poles, conductors, crossarms and other equipment, fixing known defects, and strengthening parts of the electricity network that supply rural and urban areas. 

Power outages 

Planned outages are needed so our contractors can complete this work safely. We understand outages are never convenient and we will work with our contractors to minimise disruption where possible.  

Affected customers will receive outage information from their electricity retailer (the company they pay their power bill to) before any planned outage. Customers can also check planned outage information closer to the time on our website.  

Alongside our contractors, we will work to minimise disruption to residents, businesses and road users. Traffic management, construction activity or short interruptions may be visible in some areas, depending on the work.

When work is happening 

Some work has already started in more urban areas. The next stage is expected to run from October 2026 to April 2027, depending on weather and site access. 

This is part of a wider programme of work that began last year and will continue over the next two summers. In rural or hard-to-access areas, work may need to be carefully timed around weather, access and community needs.
