Unlocking energy efficiency in New Zealand
Energy efficiency in New Zealand was the topic of a panel discussion organised by Business NZ Energy Council (BEC). The panel discussed recent energy scarcity issues in New Zealand and emphasised the importance of energy efficiency and productivity. They highlighted that while increasing energy supply is crucial, investing in energy efficiency is equally important. The facilitator, Roger Sutton, led the discussion, focusing on four main themes:
- Cost of wind and solar energy: The panel debated whether the decreasing costs of wind and solar energy might reduce the need for energy efficiency. However, they concluded that energy efficiency remains essential due to its cost-effectiveness and benefits.
- Year-round energy efficiency: They discussed the need for energy efficiency throughout the year, not only during peak times, and the importance of flexibility in energy use.
- Regulation and standards: The panel considered the role of standards and regulations in promoting energy efficiency and whether these measures could benefit the market and productivity.
- Barriers to energy efficiency: They identified several barriers to implementing energy efficiency, including lack of information, prioritisation issues, and the need for better data and advice for consumers and businesses.
Panel members:
- Roger Sutton: Facilitator and Principal Strategic Advisor at DETA, with more than 30 years’ experience in the energy industry.
- Sam Elders (Orion): General Manager of Energy Futures at Orion Group, responsible for electricity distribution in Christchurch City and Selwyn District.
- Chris Mardon: Representative from Ecobulb, previously involved with Energy Efficiency company Energy Mad.
- Marcos Pelenur: Chief Executive of the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA), with a background in demand management and energy.
