Network capacity maps
Geographic Information System (GIS) technology has become an essential tool for visualising and managing the capacity of electricity networks. By integrating spatial data with network infrastructure information, GIS-powered maps enable utilities and stakeholders to evaluate current capabilities, identify potential constraints, and plan for future expansions with enhanced accuracy. Powerco and national grid operator, Transpower, utilise GIS tools to improve transparency and operational efficiency.
Transpower's GIS services and data
Transpower, provides comprehensive geospatial services through its open data platform, Envision. This tool allows users to search, view, access and download data related to the national transmission network, including substations, transmission lines and grid exit points (GXP). Envision Opportunities complements this information by providing specific information around the connection capacity for any location on the National Grid. By offering this data, Transpower supports better understanding of the national grid's structure and capacity, assisting in operational planning and public engagement.
Powerco's capacity maps
Powerco offers two interactive GIS-powered maps to provide insights about its network capacity. These tools are designed to assist customers with large-scale energy projects:
- Demand capacity map: This map highlights the approximate capacity available on Powerco’s high-voltage (HV) network, helping commercial and industrial customers determine the feasibility of connecting new loads or large-scale demand to the network.
- DG hosting capacity map: This map provides insights into the hosting capacity of Powerco's network for distributed generation (DG), enabling utility scale DG customers to identify locations where renewable energy or other distributed energy resources can be accommodated.
Both maps are updated regularly to provide users with accurate and current information for planning purposes, supporting informed decisions about integrating new demand or generation into Powerco's electricity network.
These GIS-powered tools demonstrate the electricity sector's commitment to leveraging advanced mapping technologies. They enhance network transparency, enable informed decision-making, and facilitate the efficient integration of new energy resources into the grid.
