Community energy resilience
Powerco is taking significant steps to enhance energy resilience and sustainability across New Zealand, with a strong focus on innovative solutions like the creation of PowerHubs or network adaptations such as installing changeover switches.
PowerHubs, hybrid Stand Alone Power Supply (SAPS) systems, are being installed alongside key community buildings to provide reliable energy during emergencies. Combining solar power, diesel generation, and battery storage, the PowerHubs ensure uninterrupted access to essential services such as heating, lighting, cooking, and device charging when traditional power supplies are disrupted.
The first of these hubs is operational in Ākitio, with plans to expand to other regions, including Whanganui River, Coromandel, and Tararua, over the next five years.
This initiative reflects Powerco's commitment to community-driven energy solutions. By strategically placing these units, Powerco aims to bolster local resilience, ensuring critical facilities can continue operating during lengthy power outages. PowerHubs also align with broader goals of reducing emissions and supporting sustainable energy practices.
